Even Google has let me down.

The Hymnal 1982, without a word of explanation for those of us new to the arcane world of church music, posits these two lined staffs with a flat on the top line amidst the service music.
Google is willing to teach me anything I want to know about Gregorian Chant Notation, but nowhere amidst the vast array of facts and factoids on the internets can I find least clue as to where "do" is or where the half and whole steps live on these tiny stafflets.
(Make haste to) help me !!!
